We are seeking expressions of interest for our 2022 Fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre. This position is a 12 month opportunity for a suitable candidate to train in advanced Thoracic Surgery with a focus on Minimally Invasive Thoracic techniques including Robotic Surgery. The role has a strong emphasis on Thoracic Surgical Oncology which is practiced in a busy and established Multi Disciplinary Thoracic Cancer Tumour Stream. There is significant exposure to advanced imaging including CT and PET, Bronchoscopy with EBUS, Radiation and Medical Oncology and Pathology, and Information Technology platforms. Our other major emphasis is in Trauma Surgery with a well-established practice in Surgical Stabilisation of Rib Fractures.
The Thoracic Surgical Service performs over 600 cases per year with 5 dedicated operating sessions, 3 clinics & 2 MDMs weekly. The Service employs 4 specialist Thoracic Surgeons and is supported by a non-accredited Thoracic Surgery Registrar, resident staff and a Lung Liaison Nurse. Whilst the Service is part of the RMH Cardiothoracic Unit, the Thoracic Service operates independently with no requirement for the Fellow to participate in Cardiac Surgery. A 1-in-2 Thoracic call roster is shared with the Registrar.
Applicants need to have completed their Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent for overseas applicants. Fellows needing to complete their final examination hurdle can also be considered.
